Texas House passes school choice bill, priming pump for a national option: ‘Texas government school monopoly has fallen’

Texas Republicans succeeded by passing the Universal School Choice Act with 86-63 votes after decades of trying to overcome obstacles placed before them by Democrats and opposition.

Passing Texas Senate Bill 2 – Despite opposition from nominal Republican state lawmakers, it’s a big win for Dade Phelan and Gary Van Daver and for parents across the state, and for Republican Gov. Greg Abbott after 11 hours of debate. It is shown Earlier this year, school choice was a top priority for the 89th Congress. It may also help set the stage for similar victory at the national level.

“Today, Texas House has taken the final step forward to moving forward with Senate Bill 2, Abbott, who is planning to ratify the legislation after it is likely to be adopted by the Senate. I said In a statement. “This is an unprecedented victory for the future of our families, our students, and our great nation.”

According to For the Texas Tribune, this is because since 1957, Texas homes approved laws that allow state funds to be made available to families in private education for children.

Lt. Col. Dan Patrick noted that he observed both his current abilities and the state Senate president, Texas Senators had observed six school choices.

“I’m pretty much tired of winning.”

Patrick praised his colleagues for the tenacity and nodded to the last minute boost offered by President Donald Trump. It is reportedly “This is a big vote today,” he told state lawmakers at a meeting Wednesday, and he hoped they would “vote in a positive way.”

Corey DeangelisA senior fellow at the American Cultural Project and a visiting guest at the American Institute of Economics, told Blaze News that Texas was “not the party’s first,” but that over the past four years, 15 other states have passed the universal school choice.

“Texas’ victory is a big deal,” DeAngelis said. “When Texas joins the club, about 40% of the US school-age population currently lives in states that have passed the universal school choice policy. It’s up from 0% in 2021. The momentum of education freedom is incredible.”

Deangelis joked.

Senate Bill 2, introduced by State Senator Brandon Clayton, has two purposes. First, “providing additional educational options to support families in this state to exercise their right to direct their children’s educational needs.” and secondly, “achieving the general spread of knowledge.”

If it is finally enacted, the bill would direct $1 billion in state funds to create an education savings account. A voucher that Lone Star State families can use to pay private school tuition and school-related expenses.

Students eligible under a private school program receive $10,000 a year. Students with disabilities receive up to $30,000 a year. And homeschooled students receive $2,000.

The Tribune said the law would tether dollars per program in favor of public education funding so that an increase or decrease in public school funding is reflected in the amounts received by students participating in the program.

While this marks the decisive battle for school choices, Deangelis told Blaze News that “the fight is not over.”

“Over 100,000 students will want to use Texas’ school selection program. Once that demand is shown, the Texas Legislature will need to remove the limit on the number of scholarships like states like Arizona and Florida. “I’m confident that Texas Republicans will listen to that demand from their parents.”

“We look back at the day as one of the darkest things in Texas history.”

In the meantime, if the program is involved, poor families or Texas students should require that the supply exceed the supply if students with disabilities are prioritized.

Despite support for choices on other issues, state Democrats, especially those united with public teacher unions, are furious at the promise of affordable options when it comes to education for Texas children.

“This bill is everything wrong with politics. It’s a big profit on the everyday Texan,” said Rep. Gina Hinojosa, a Democrat who was approved by the Texas Teachers Association and the Texas American Federation of Teachers.

Democrat State Rep. John Beussie III has also been approved in the rear of Texas. I said“The history book will remember who gave public education. We look back on the day as one of the darkest things in Texas history.”

Former public school administrator, state legislator Alma Allen (D). Proposed “Harmful voucher scams” somehow send states backwards.

Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Recommended The Texas Senate agreed to Senators Bill 2 on Friday afternoon, reiterating that Gov. Abbott is “ready to sign this bill.”

Senator Brandon Clayton It’s attracting attention“Parents, lawmakers and education advocates across Texas are finally seeing the real momentum to bring freedom of education.”

Success in Texas may have national significance.

“The Texas government’s monopoly on schools has fallen. There’s a high chance that they’ll fall in Texas, where Texas is led. The dam is broken and there’s nothing Randy Weingarten and the teachers’ union can do about it,” Deangelis said. “The momentum of this school choice is sure to drive the fight for school choice across the country. President Trump campaigned on the issue and ultimately scored nine points on a parent vote. It’s the state’s mandate to education freedom.”

“Now is the time to hand over the finish line a national school choice.”

Earlier this year, Republicans Adrian Smith (Nevada), Burgess Owens (Utah) and Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.) It was introduced The Act amended the Internal Revenue Act of 1986 to provide charitable contributions to individuals and businesses to the Bankroll Scholarship Award for Students to cover costs related to K-12 public and private education.

“Children’s Act for Education Choice is a top priority for the 119th Congress, because it places power where it belongs – the hands of families, not bureaucrats.” I said In a statement. “The days of allowing a universal system that locks students in a mediocre way are over.”

Scholarships under the proposed law will be treated as vouchers to students. Most families are eligible as long as their household income is not 300% greater than their median local income.

New York Times It’s attracting attention The national bill could be included in the budget settlement bill this summer. Therefore, Republicans only need 51 votes in the US Senate to seal the deal.

“The Children’s Education Choice Act, handed over by the House Ways and Means Committee last year, has already been co-hosted by most Republicans in Congress,” Deangelis said. “President Trump said he’s signing it, and the law is supported by Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate majority leader John Tune. Now it’s time to pass national school choices to the finish line.”
