Pope Francis met briefly at the hotel on Sunday and met with US Vice President JD Vance, who is spending Easter with his family in Rome.
AP Report Vance’s convoy was entered through the side gates into the Vatican city, parked near the hotel residence in Francis, and Easter Mass was celebrated near St. Peter’s Square.
Having significantly reduced his workload to recover from the illness, Francis has delegated the Mass celebration to another cardinal.
“Pope Francis had a private encounter that lasted several minutes to exchange good wishes on Easter Day,” the Vatican statement confirmed.
No further details have been announced about the meeting.
Vance and the Pope have been engulfed in migration and the successful Trump administration’s efforts to expel illegal immigrants on a large scale.
The vice president, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, met with the Vatican Secretary of State and the Foreign Minister on Saturday.
Before Trump took office, Pope Francis called for a plan to expel illegals into “disgrace,” claiming that this was “not a way to solve things.”
As reported by Breitbart News, Francis later made a surprise appearance at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
It was unclear whether the 88-year-old Pope would attend the Holy Week gathering after five weeks of treatment for an infection that led to dual pneumonia and his recent discharge from the hospital.
