Pope Francis has died at the age of 88.
He passed away in his residence.
The Vatican announced that Pope Francis has died in Rome early on Monday. He was 88 years old.
The first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church served for 12 years, having been appointed to the position in March 2013 after the unprecedented resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.
Francis had recently been discharged from Gemeri Hospital in Rome, where he had been admitted on February 14th due to breathing difficulties and was diagnosed with severe double pneumonia.
He passed away at Casa Santa Malta in the Vatican.
Following his death, Donald Trump shared a message stating, “Rest in peace to the beloved Pope Francis! May God bless him and all who cherish him!”
