Vigilantes reportedly beat up male accused of trying to rape elderly woman; cops told they could find suspect in hospital

The vigilantes defeated a man who was accused of trying to rape an elderly woman in the Bronx last week. And an anonymous caller says he can help police and find the suspect in the hospital. WNBC-TV reported.

The NYPD released a video of the man in question who saw him not wearing pants shortly after he allegedly tried to rape a 70-year-old woman near Creston Avenue and 184th Avenue on Friday around 12pm.

“Yeah, we beat him. … And when he comes back, I’ll shake him up again.”

Police told WNBC that the vigilantes discovered the suspect less than 24 hours later.

Law enforcement sources also told police that an anonymous caller had told police that residents had taken the suspect into custody and delivered vigilante beatdowns to him near Tyborough Avenue and 187th Avenue. The caller concluded that detectives could find the suspect in the hospital, WNBC reported.

New York Postcited police and residents, identifying the suspect as 50-year-old Oswald Ramos.

The NYPD reported that Ramos, who lives near the crime scene, was arrested Sunday and said he was charged with rape and attempted robbery. Law enforcement said he was still at St. Barnabas Hospital and details about his injuries are unknown.

The paper added that an unknown vigilantean resident said he would repeat the beatdown on Tuesday.

“He deserves what he got,” Stenller Contreras told WNBC, adding that the catch-and-release system is thin in the neighborhood.

“It could have been my grandmother, so I would have done the same thing. “I would have done the same thing.”

Police sources added to WNBC that the suspect is not cooperative in telling detectives the identity of the man who beat him.

Ramos was last arrested on October 6, 2018 and allegedly shot an officer, police said, as he allegedly claimed he had taken the Bronx Deli.

He barged into a store on East 178th Street near Mapes Avenue, flashed the butt of a black handgun and said, “Give me money. I just shot the police. I’ll be back tomorrow looking for more money.”

He had not shot the officers, police sources said.

The disposal of that case was not immediately known.

Authorities say most of Ramos’ previous arrests were for robbery and robbery.
