Chinese electric car giant BYD’s profit doubles in blow to Tesla

Chinese electric car maker BYD doubled its profits to $1.3 billion in the first quarter as it continues to surge beyond its major rival Elon Musk’s Tesla.

The Shenzhen-based company said annual revenue jumped over $100 billion last month – quarterly revenues rose 36% to 17.036 billion yuan, or about $235.1 billion for China’s top selling auto brands.

In comparison, Tesla has struggled with general rebound from its work with tougher competition in China, aging vehicle lineup and masks’ government efficiency, but earlier this week reported quarterly profits plummeted from 71% to $499 million as revenue fell 9% to $19.34 billion.

Total sales of BYD’s electric and plug-in hybrids rose 60% in the first quarter, up nearly 1 million. Tesla Vehicle Shipment – Close Proxy for Sale – sinking 336,681 from 13% in the same period.

The company said it would like to export 800,000 vehicles to the international market this year as part of its expected sales of 5.5 million units.

As the post reported, BYD has emerged as a major threat to US automakers, including Tesla and Detroit’s Big Three, thanks to rapid expansion in major growth markets such as Europe, Mexico and South America.

BYD has announced innovations such as five-minute charging of EVs and an autonomous driving system called “God’s Eye.” However, Tesla is considered to have an advantage over its rivals from a software standpoint.

BYD does not sell vehicles in the US due to large tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. However, the company is known to manufacture up to 80% of automotive parts in-house. This is largely insulated from escalating the indestructible tariffs imposed by the US and China.

Meanwhile, facing analyst blowback on Tesla’s brand crisis, Musk revealed earlier this week that he expects “a significant drop in time allocation to Doge” by the end of March.

The billionaire said he would devote most of his time to Tesla, but he said he would “continue to spend a day or two a week on government issues, as long as the president wants me to do so.”

Masks’ ejection was already underway as federal regulations requiring special government employees (SGES) can remain in the post for 130 days in a row. It will put his last day on May 30th.
