Biden poses for photo with mourners, after arriving to Pope Francis funeral with wife Jill Biden

Former President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden arrived at St. Peters Square in Vatican on Saturday morning for Pope Francis’ funeral.

The 82-year-old, who had met Pope Francis three times as vice president, hugged his wife and priest, walking down the stairs to the seating area.

Bidens is not sitting near President Donald Trump as he is not the current head of state. Instead, they sit further in the foreign high-ranking section.

Biden was the second Roman Catholic to serve in the White House behind John F. Kennedy.

As Vice President, he led the US delegation at the inauguration of Pope Francis in March 2013.

The two met during a clergyman’s visit to Washington, D.C., as Francis spoke during a joint session of Congress and Biden sat behind Catholic Church leaders within Congress.

Biden last met Pope Francis on a trip to Italy in June 2024 for the G7 Summit.

Before the funeral began at 10am, Biden was snapped with another mourning selfie

The Chief’s former commander paid tribute to Francis after his death Monday.

“He was different from the one who came before him.

“Pope Francis is remembered as one of the most consequential leaders of our time, and I would rather know him,” he continued.

“He welcomed everything and made the church feel like he saw it,” he continued.

“He promoted equality and ended poverty and suffering around the world. And most of all, he was the Pope for everyone. He was the Pope of the People. He was the Light of Faith, Hope, Love.” Biden said.
