On Friday, President Trump shared a concise overview of his 2026 budget, suggesting cuts totaling $163 billion in areas like education, foreign aid, and environmental protection. In contrast, he proposed raising defense spending to over $1 trillion.
The planned $163 billion reduction in non-defense discretionary spending represents a 22.6% decrease from current amounts, according to the budget summary issued by the White House.
In another note, the president is suggesting a 13% hike in Pentagon funding, which would bring that budget to $1.01 trillion. Additionally, he’s asking for $175 billion aimed at enhancing border security.
Now, it’s up to Congress to draft its own budget plan.

The White House is pressing Congress to swiftly approve a spending proposal. This week, Susie Wills remarked that securing Trump’s agenda through legislation is vital for the next six months.
“We should have a budget that encompasses nearly all of the president’s priorities by then,” Wills noted on Tuesday.
“And hey, if that’s all we manage to achieve, well, that doesn’t mean we won’t tackle other frameworks down the line,” she added.
