China Advances Fighter Jet Design with AI

China is pushing forward in fighter jet development using its AI platform, Deepseek. The Shenyan Aircraft Design Institute, part of the National Air Industry Corporation, is leading this initiative. Wang Yongqing, the chief designer there, revealed that they have started employing AI technology to craft the country’s most advanced military aircraft.

Wang emphasized the exciting possibilities that this technology brings for aerospace research and development. His team is looking into large-scale language models to tackle complex challenges in a practical way. He stated, “This is an important step and points to the future direction of aerospace research.”

Having worked in the lab for four decades, Wang has been instrumental in designing several military jets, including the Navy’s J-15 Flying Shark and the stealthy J-35 fighter.

Notably, AI helps to alleviate researchers from tedious review tasks, allowing them to concentrate on more significant projects.

Deepseek, based in Hangzhou, has quickly established itself in the global AI scene, introducing models that rival those from Western companies but at lower operational costs.

Meanwhile, Deepseek is gearing up to launch its new model, Deepseek-R2, the successor to Deepseek-R1. There are expectations that it will compete effectively against models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, all while being more affordable.

The R2 model incorporates an advanced machine learning architecture known as the hybrid mixed mixture (MOE), which is claimed to be 97.3% cheaper than OpenAI’s GPT-4O. This method allows AI models to be divided into distinct subnetworks that work together for various tasks.

This development comes on the heels of a significant upgrade to the company’s leading V3 language model in March, enhancing its competitive edge against major US technology players.
