Paula Abdul shares a lighthearted take on her history with former ‘American Idol’ judge Simon Cowell.

Paula Abdul Reflects on Her “American Idol” Experience

Paula Abdul, the renowned singer, dancer, and choreographer, recently opened up in an interview about her time on “American Idol.” At 62, she reminisced about the obstacles she faced as the sole woman on the judging panel from 2002 to 2009. “I had to deal with the man on my left,” she shared, humorously hinting at Simon Cowell, “which, I think, left this permanent mark on the left side of my brain with his British accent.” However, she felt fortunate to have Randy Jackson on her right, making the experience a bit easier.

As for the current “American Idol” judge, Carrie Underwood, Abdul had only praise. “Carrie has incredible talent and came from humble beginnings,” she noted. Underwood, who was a contestant on the show’s fourth season in 2005, has built a remarkable career and is now giving back as a judge. “She’s doing a fantastic job.”

Reflecting on Underwood’s journey, Abdul recalled how Cowell had bold predictions about her future back then. “He said she would not only win but would also sell more records than previous winners,” she mentioned. Indeed, Underwood’s success as a country artist speaks volumes.

In an August 2024 video, Underwood announced her return to “American Idol.” “I’ve come from being someone unknown to reaching tens of millions on this show,” she expressed pride in her accomplishments since her time there.
