Trump condemns Mexican president for turning down proposal for US troops to combat cartels.

Trump’s Proposal to Send Troops to Mexico Rejected

President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declined an offer for U.S. troops to assist in combating drug cartels, attributing her decision to fear.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed disappointment over Sheinbaum’s rejection. He suggested that sending American troops could help deal with the cartels that play a significant role in drug trafficking. “She’s so afraid of the cartels that she can’t even think straight,” Trump remarked, acknowledging Sheinbaum as a lovely person but emphasizing her overwhelming fear.

This comes after Sheinbaum mentioned last month that Trump had pressured her to accept a larger U.S. role in tackling drug issues in Mexico.

Sheinbaum Firm on Sovereignty

Sheinbaum responded by stating that Mexico would “never accept” U.S. military presence. She emphasized, “Our territory is intransitable, and sovereignty is intransitable. We can work together, but we need to do it on our own terms.”

Under Trump’s previous directives in January, there has been a noticeable increase in American military presence at the U.S.-Mexico border aimed at curbing illegal immigration.

In his argument for military support, Trump noted the necessity of addressing the influx of fentanyl, which he linked directly to the actions of drug cartels. “They’re bad news,” he stated. “If Mexico needed our help against the cartels, we would be honored to assist.” He referred to the cartels as evil forces attempting to harm the U.S.

Additionally, the U.S. Northern Command has intensified its operations along the southern border, deploying troops and equipment to enhance surveillance efforts against fentanyl trafficking. Furthermore, Trump has labeled various gangs and cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations,” enabling law enforcement to have more tools at their disposal to combat these groups.
