Pence promises to speak out against President Trump’s steps away from the conservative agenda.

Mike Pence Reflects on Role and GOP Direction

Former Vice President Mike Pence may not hold a position of power now, but he certainly doesn’t feel powerless. After having a deep loyalty to President Donald Trump during their time in office, things shifted for Pence when he refused to comply with Trump’s request to overturn the 2020 election results. Now, he’s positioning himself as a vocal critic of the GOP, especially as Trump moves away from the conservative principles that defined their administration.

In an exclusive digital interview after receiving the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in Boston, Pence remarked on their time in leadership. “If you look at the years we spent together, they were marked by a clear conservative agenda,” he stated. He continued to credit Trump for his electoral success, emphasizing the need to defend against what he sees as a shift towards a liberal Democratic administration.

Pence praised Trump for various achievements, including securing the southern border, boosting military morale, and making efforts to counter extremism. However, he voiced concerns about certain policies that diverge from the core conservative values. “Some steps away from that agenda should raise alarms regarding both Trump’s legacy and the future of our party and our nation,” he said.

He further articulated a vision for the nation, advocating for strong defense, American leadership globally, smaller government, lower taxes, traditional values, and the right to life. “For our country’s success, we must adhere to these principles,” he asserted.

His criticism extended to proposals by House Republicans considering tax increases on the wealthy, a measure Pence sided against, viewing it as harmful to small business owners. “We need to ensure that all Trump-era tax cuts remain in place to support economic growth,” he stated.

Pence, who has not shied away from expressing his views on foreign policy, challenged Trump to adopt a more robust approach internationally. During the event at the JFK Presidential Library, he expressed a commitment to support Ukraine, earning a standing ovation from attendees.

His own campaign for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination has stumbled, but Pence remains determined to represent traditional conservative values. Despite facing a former boss for the nomination, he’s actively campaigning in early voting states such as Iowa and New Hampshire. Nevertheless, he halted his campaign shortly after starting, recognizing the uphill battle he faced.

When asked about potential future political endeavors, Pence kept his options open, stating, “I’ll leave it to the American people.” He’s intent on being a voice for his principles, trusting that time will reveal what’s next. While Trump has sought a third term in 2028, Pence noted that prioritizing the Constitution is essential for any elected official.

Reflecting on his actions during the January 6 Capitol attack, Pence discussed the importance of his constitutional duties. He emphasized, “It’s my duty to uphold the principles of democracy,” a sentiment underscored by his receiving the Courage Award, which celebrates individuals who take principled stands despite potential fallout.

In closing, he expressed gratitude for the support he’s received from Americans during his travels, asserting that despite differences, there’s a shared commitment to the nation’s core values.
