A professor at the University of Texas, Zaid Mashhour Haddad, known for his advocacy in social justice, has been arrested due to allegations of streaming child pornography. Prosecutors claim that one of these disturbing videos was visible on his television during a raid conducted by federal agents at his home.
According to the authorities, Haddad accessed over 180 child pornographic videos, linking his computer to a television mounted in his bedroom. It was revealed that one such video was actually displayed on his TV as the FBI executed a search warrant.
Details from court documents suggest that the video was sent to him through a link on Telegram.
The investigation also uncovered that Haddad was storing child pornography on his phone via the Telegram app.
Interestingly, the links he accessed often directed him to virtual meetings where child pornography was allegedly streamed live.
Arrested last Tuesday, Haddad has been charged with one count of possessing child pornography and another for intentionally accessing materials that contained child pornographic images.
At the time, he was serving as an assistant professor focused on interdisciplinary research, curriculum, and teaching at a public university.
His biography on the UTSA website describes him as a “teacher educator and advocate for social justice,” emphasizing his research interests in navigating intersecting identities within varying contexts. Previously, he worked as a high school social studies teacher and mentored students, and he was also a doctoral candidate at the University of Nevada before his tenure at UTSA.
If convicted of the child pornography charges, he could face up to 20 years in prison. The university had not yet commented on the matter.
