The Trump administration announced on Monday a plan to offer a $1,000 payment to immigrants who utilize a government app to self-report their status.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) characterized this initiative as a means to “promote travel to your country.”
While this approach is somewhat unconventional, the administration asserts it will lead to cost savings that could cover current expenses related to arrests, detention, and deportation—amounting to over $17,000.
“Self-abolization is a dignified way to exit the United States and helps undocumented individuals avoid encounters with US immigration and customs enforcement (ICE),” DHS stated in a press release.
Furthermore, the department indicated that those who voluntarily express their intention to self-abolish at CBP Homes would be prioritized for removal before their departure, provided they show significant progress toward completing their exit plans.
The government claims it can assist with booking travel and securing necessary documents, predicting that approved immigrants typically leave the US within three weeks.
The CBP Home App is a revision of the Biden administration’s CBP One app, enabling immigrants to schedule their entries at ports when seeking asylum.
The DHS website mentions that the CBP Home Mobile App allows users to manage their returns, facilitating timely and organized departures while coordinating personal, work, and educational matters.
This development reflects the heightened anxiety surrounding immigration, especially given President Trump’s commitment to overseeing the largest deportation effort in history, positioning the program as one that emphasizes “flexibility, not fear.”
In the first 100 days of the administration, officials reported deporting over 135,000 individuals, including men from Venezuela and El Salvador, many of whom face significant obstacles in claiming asylum.
