Bill Ackman, a billionaire and Harvard alumnus, expressed on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that he believes a leadership change is needed at the university. This sentiment comes after the Trump administration has scrutinized schools like Harvard, citing their handling of anti-Semitic protests since October 7, 2023. The administration has halted $2.2 billion in federal grants to Harvard and called for revocation of its tax-exempt status.
Ackman, known for his critical views of Harvard, mentioned that he supports the idea of stripping the university of its non-profit status, though he seems skeptical this will come to fruition.
Ackman stated that the university should acknowledge the validity of Trump’s criticisms and work towards addressing the issues raised. He criticized Harvard’s decision to sue the Trump administration over the frozen federal funds, labeling it as “wrong.”
“Over time, Harvard has morphed from a university into a political advocacy organization for one side,” Ackman said, arguing it doesn’t deserve non-profit status anymore. He believes that Harvard should be a center for learning and research, not an environment that permits the presence of “professional terrorist organizations” while restricting certain viewpoints. “It’s become a political advocacy organization, not a genuine university,” he added.
Even so, he spoke favorably about Harvard President Alan Gerber, calling him a “good president,” but emphasized the need for new leadership overall, specifically pointing out Penny Pritzker, the lead member of the Harvard Corporation.
The Trump administration’s moves regarding Harvard have sparked divisions among conservatives. Ackman further commented that if Harvard were structured like a typical company, it would be concerning that Pritzker holds such a prominent role in an institution facing these controversies, especially surrounding Covid management and issues related to academic freedom.
As of now, it’s uncertain whether the Trump administration will proceed with its threat regarding the university’s tax-exempt status or if the actions will undergo legal challenges in court.
