Lions’ running backs crucial for Super Bowl chances, says NFL legend

The Detroit Lions have reached noteworthy heights in their Super Bowl aspirations over the last two seasons, having clinched a conference championship in 2023 and winning 15 games in 2024. However, they still haven’t made it to the Super Bowl itself.

Barry Sanders, a Hall of Famer, has voiced his confidence that running backs Jermer Gibbs and David Montgomery can lead the team there. “They are the best duo in the NFL, and there’s no reason to change anytime soon,” he stated recently. “If the Super Bowl is in our future, these two will play a significant role.”

Gibbs had an impressive season, leading the league with 16 rushing touchdowns and accumulating 1,412 rushing yards, earning his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection. Montgomery also demonstrated his talent when healthy, recording 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in the previous year.

Sanders noted Montgomery’s solid NFL track record, especially after joining the Lions from the Bears, emphasizing how last season felt like a breakout for him. The Lions also bolstered their offensive line recently with key draft picks, enhancing their lineup of players such as Taylor Decker and Frank Ragnow.

This improvement has certainly shifted how people view the Lions since Dan Campbell took over. Expectations are rising as the season unfolds. While Detroit has shown promise in the regular season, the challenge remains—making it to the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal.
