Antifa Group Seizes University Building and Starts Fires in Response to Gaza War

Protests at Washington University Result in Dozens of Arrests

On Monday night, tensions flared at Washington University (UW) as multiple protesters were arrested during a demonstration against Israel. The police took control of a building after confrontations escalated.

A university spokesperson shared that nearly 30 individuals were arrested and are being referred for prosecution. Reports suggest that one individual was seen inciting the crowd, calling for violence against law enforcement.

Amid the chaos, shouts of “Death to the police! Abolish the police!” echoed as videos circulated showing protesters clashing with officers outside the building. One tweet depicted the situation, emphasizing the destruction occurring on campus.

Protesters reportedly set fires, employing makeshift shields crafted from trash cans as they obstructed police efforts to gain access to the engineering building. Images showed items blocking entrances and demonstrators displaying Palestinian flags.

Despite the resistance, armed officers managed to enter the building and conducted arrests. Flames were sighted emanating from trash containers, prompting a firefighting response to control the situation.

The university indicated that charges such as trespassing, destruction of property, and disorderly conduct would be forwarded to the King County Prosecutor’s Office. Additionally, student participants may face disciplinary actions.

The Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately comment on the ongoing investigation. There’s no clear information yet on whether those arrested are affiliated with UW.

Since the outbreak of violence in Gaza following attacks by Hamas, UW has seen increased incidents involving anti-Israel protests. Past demonstrations led to the establishment of an unauthorized tent camp on campus, which lingered until officials addressed various demands from the activists.

UW has also faced scrutiny regarding compliance with federal mandates to combat anti-Semitism in the wake of protests. The university has asserted its commitment to opposing all forms of anti-Semitism and stresses that disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
