A recent incident at a factory in China has ignited discussions about the risks associated with artificial intelligence after a humanoid robot was seen striking a handler in alarming CCTV footage. The video, which has circulated widely on social media, raises concerns regarding the rapid evolution of robotics and AI technologies.
Filmed in a factory, the video depicts a Unitree H1 humanoid robot suspended from a crane as it unexpectedly malfunctions. Two men in the video are closely observing and testing the robot’s functions when suddenly, it spirals out of control, flailing its arms and legs in a chaotic manner that mirrors scenes from a sci-fi horror film.
As one man attempts to dodge the robot’s erratic motion, it lunges forward, dragging its stand and sending computers and other objects crashing to the ground. Eventually, one of the men steps in to try and stabilize the situation by adjusting the robot’s stand.
The incident has sparked fear of a robotic uprising, with many viewers likening the scene to the Terminator movies, questioning whether machines might soon go rogue.
Unitree robots have been in the news several times for various incidents. Earlier this year, a disturbing video showed a humanoid robot misbehaving at the Spring Festival Gala in Tianjin, where it unexpectedly charged into a group of festival-goers, causing alarm.
There have also been other notable cases of rogue AI, including one in which a robot allegedly attacked an engineer at Tesla’s Texas facility. Many of these situations have been attributed to software malfunctions, underscoring the need for thorough testing and quality assurance in AI development.
