From Uri 2016 to Pahalgam 2025: India’s Firm Response to Three Significant Terror Attacks

Quick Take

On May 6, 2025, India executed Operation Sindoah, a military response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahargam that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. This operation targeted nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and areas under its control using advanced weaponry.

Background

At 1:44 AM on May 6, Indian forces targeted this operation, roughly two weeks after the Pahargam incident where terrorists linked to the Pakistan-based Rashkar Aetaiba killed primarily civilians, including Nepalis. The operation employed precision weapons like scalp missiles and drone-assisted munitions to identify and hit its targets.

The targets included training sites connected to the infamous Mumbai attack of 2008 and strategic launchpads used by groups like Rashkar, Jaish e Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen. These groups have been responsible for numerous tragedies, such as the URI attack in 2016 and the Pulwama bombing in 2019.

This marked India’s first Tri-Service operation since the 1971 conflict with Pakistan. Speculation about a military response cultivated when Prime Minister Narendra Modi granted troops “full operational freedom,” escalating with national defense drills announced in Rajasthan earlier that week.

Operation Sindoah

On April 22, 2025, the Baisaran Valley near Pahargam, a picturesque tourist spot, saw a sudden massacre as four terrorists emerged and caused a devastating toll. Around that time, Modi pledged to ensure justice and corner those responsible for the attack.

Following the attack, India launched a precise overnight operation targeting the terrorist groups’ main headquarters. Sources indicated that “Op Sindoah” was a radical step aimed at retaliating against Pakistan.

Immediate Consequences

An immediate consequence of the military action was a retaliatory shooting in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of three civilians. This operation marks the third major military response by India in recent years following significant terrorist incidents, including URI and Pulwama.

Review of Past Operations

Going back, the URI Surgical Strike occurred on September 18, 2016, when terrorists attacked an army base in Uri, killing nineteen soldiers. The response involved cross-border military action, targeting launchpads used by terrorists, resulting in significant casualties among the attackers.

More recently, in February 2019, India conducted an airstrike in Balakot as a response to a deadly attack on a CRPF convoy, which killed over 40 personnel. This operation targeted a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp inside Pakistan, further highlighting the ongoing tensions and military strategies employed in response to terrorism.
