High school dance instructor charged with a serious offense in connection to alleged student sex scandal

In South Carolina, two teachers are under investigation for alleged sexual relationships with their students.

Victoria Catherine Montgomery, a 32-year-old from Bluffton, was arrested on Friday. She faces a felony charge for sexual battery involving a student who is over 18 but under her direct supervision. Beaufort County Jail records indicate that no additional units were impacted.

Although the student was of legal age, the charges stem from Montgomery’s authoritative role over him.

She was released the following morning from Beaufort County Detention Center after posting a personal recognizance bond.

Montgomery serves as a dance instructor at Hilton Head Island High School and is also the head of the arts department. She joined the faculty in the 2021-2022 academic year after relocating from Flint, Michigan.

Principal Steve Sidrich had informed authorities about the alleged situation last Wednesday.

School officials promptly contacted the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and placed Montgomery on paid administrative leave upon receiving allegations of abuse.

In a statement, the Beaufort County School District acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating that it is cooperating with law enforcement for both human resources and investigatory matters.

They added, “This matter raises valid concerns, and we are addressing it with utmost seriousness.”

Danny Allen from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that they are actively looking into claims of inappropriate conduct between teachers and students.

However, further details regarding the specific allegations of sexual misconduct remain scarce.

Investigators believe the alleged victim was a student of Montgomery’s.

District spokesman Candace Bruder emphasized that a certified educator or substitute will take over all of Montgomery’s classes, with families being notified via email.

Depending on the investigation’s outcome, Montgomery could face disciplinary measures or termination, and her teaching license from the South Carolina Department of Education may also be revoked.
