New York taxpayers might have to pay for Letitia James’ legal expenses.

The wording in the new budget bill, set to be voted on late Wednesday, means New York taxpayers might end up covering the legal expenses for Attorney General Letitia James in a fraud case initiated by the Trump administration.

Last week, Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, put forward a proposed budget of $254 billion, and the state legislature is gearing up to begin voting on it this week. On Wednesday evening, both Congressional Republicans and Democrats will vote on a draft budget for the state.

This draft includes provisions that would require taxpayers to finance legal defense funds, as indicated by a version shared with state Republicans.

The draft, prepared by departments controlled by Democrats and Congressional leaders, allocates $10 million for elected officials to utilize for legal defenses when related to their official duties.

James’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, stated that the Trump administration’s allegations of mortgage fraud are mere “political retaliation,” particularly in light of James’s previous legal actions against Trump, which led to his first felony conviction.

According to documents in the New York Operations Budget Bill, state officials can tap into the Legal Defense Fund if they have previously interacted with U.S. government officials. Additionally, there’s a specific guideline that applies to James, given her history with lawsuits against Trump.

A source familiar with the Operations Budget Draft indicated that it is expected to be published on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for James mentioned that Trump has promised a “vicious revenge tour” against her, making her a primary target. The spokesperson also noted that James intends to use both private and public state funds for her defense.

In the meantime, New York GOP Chairman Ed Cox commented that this situation exemplifies corruption, suggesting that political insiders manipulate the system to safeguard their interests while regular families suffer the consequences. He condemned James for using her position to attack political adversaries, implying that taxpayers will ultimately foot the bill for these political battles.
