Flight attendant shares essential tips on what not to wear while flying

Is it a fashion faux pas or a potential flight risk?

Barbara Bacilieri, a former flight attendant and popular YouTube personality, suggests that your outfit can affect how quickly you can exit a plane when necessary. She emphasizes that airlines have an unspoken dress code.

“They don’t always make it clear, but breaking these rules could result in being denied boarding or delayed during security checks. In emergencies, it could even be dangerous,” Bacilieri explains.

The 29-year-old, known for her advice, is particularly vocal about what not to wear during flights.

“High heels can damage evacuation slides,” she warns, pointing out that crew members are trained to remove such footwear in emergencies. “They can puncture inflatable slides, leading to dangerous situations.” She also cautions against wearing metal accessories like large belt buckles or heavy jewelry as they pose similar risks.

Bacilieri raises another point: skimpy clothing, such as mini dresses or shorts, can be hazardous during an emergency. “While they might look great on social media, they can lead to painful skin injuries during an evacuation,” she says. “In a rush, that inflating slide can cause serious discomfort.”

Leggings, commonly worn for travel, also come under scrutiny. Aviation safety experts have noted that the fabric can be flammable in the event of an accident.

If a fire occurs, stretchy pants could “melt against the skin or cause severe burns,” she mentions.

As for clothing guidelines, Bacilieri finds that they often lack clarity. “It’s a tricky situation,” she notes. Recently, two women were removed from a flight for wearing crop tops, despite simply trying to cool down. They sought clarification on the policy but received no refund.

Cosplaying as airline crew is another no-go. Bacilieri warns that doing so can lead to confusion during emergencies.

To avoid being the passenger who holds up security lines, she recommends steering clear of metal belts, bulky jewelry, heavy coats, and high boots. “These can slow you down and make you an easy target for theft. Yes, even in secure areas,” she adds.

So what should you wear instead? Bacilieri suggests opting for comfortable sneakers, stretchy pants, a light jacket, and attire that allows for easy movement through the airport. “Always remember, you’re representing yourself,” she concludes, encouraging travelers to dress comfortably but with a touch of professionalism.
