Bringing Russia and Ukraine Together for a Meeting is the Next Significant Move

Washington Wies President JD Vance expressed on Wednesday that the Trump administration is optimistic about a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials, viewing it as a crucial step toward concluding the ongoing conflict.

While participating in a Q&A at the MSC Munich Leader’s Conference in Washington, DC, Vance informed former MSC Chairman Wolfgang Isinger that uniting the two parties is the intended outcome of the Peace Conference.

“What we aim to accomplish now is to have both Russians and Ukrainians agree on some basic guidelines for dialogue,” Vance stated.

“The US is willing to be part of these discussions, but it’s crucial for Russians and Ukrainians to start conversing directly, and that’s really the next important step,” he more specifically noted.

Vance remarked that while Russians are making “excessive” demands during discussions, establishing direct communication between the two nations is vital, as there is a significant “gap” in their negotiating positions.

“I mentioned both sides—Russians and Ukrainians. The Ukrainians handed us a paper listing what they see as essential to resolve this conflict from their viewpoint,” he explained.

“Mediating the situation entirely might be unrealistic without direct talks between the two, so that’s where our focus is. However, I’m not giving up hope just yet,” he added.

Vance referred to Trump’s “strategic realism” in handling negotiations.

“You don’t have to validate Russia’s actions. Certainly, both the President and I have denounced the aggressive actions, but understanding the other side’s perspective is crucial to resolving the conflict,” he stated. “This is what President Trump aims for; he insists on clear demands from the Russians to help end the discord.”

“Again, agreeing with all demands isn’t necessary. The initial peace offer from the Russians indicated they were asking for too much, but this is part of how negotiations are evolving,” he elaborated.

Wrapping up his thoughts, Vance mentioned that, amidst significant animosity, the preference remains for a resolution that provides economic benefits to both Russia and Ukraine, aside from simply stopping the violence.

“I believe what I’m saying reflects President Trump’s sentiments. Our firm stance is that the ongoing conflict harms us, Europe, Russia, and Ukraine,” he concluded.

“If cooler heads prevail, this can lead to a lasting peace that benefits both Ukrainians and Russians economically.
