I was in the West Midlands early this morning when a friend in Ireland, currently in Abu Dhabi, sent me a message linking to a story that really shocked him. It was about the rise of 24-hour high street gambling arcades in the UK.
This friend is really into horse racing. Honestly, when he starts talking about it, I can barely keep up. Sometimes, I think I’d understand more from his horse’s neighbor than from him. He’s no stranger to the betting scene, and, well, if he’s surprised by the number of these gambling places operating around the clock, I’m surprised too.
As I walked down a quiet high street around 7:30 a.m., I glanced at the article just as I was passing one of these arcades. It was already open, of course, since these places never close. There, 24/7, anyone can escape reality by playing the machines.
I found two reviews on Google that stood out. One said, “The staff were great, friendly, and the place was clean.” But another warned, “Do yourself a favor and stay away from this place.” These opinions might seem contradictory at first glance, but I think they’re connected. I tend to agree more with the first review than the second. Having witnessed the struggles of gambling addiction, I understand the specific issues some slot machines can bring. Yet, I also see that many people genuinely enjoy their time there. But is this really the kind of place where people are flooded with happiness, open every hour of every day? What does that say about us? At 3 a.m., the arcade might be one of the only spots along with the BP garage on Ring Road that remains open.
It’s not really my place to judge, but can someone really be gambling at 3 a.m.?
I get that you can gamble online whenever you want, but shouldn’t we at least limit the hours for physical locations or pubs? I’m not sure how we’ve ended up here, but can someone please put a stop to this?
