Trump announces he is withdrawing Ed Martin from consideration for the position of US attorney in DC.

President Donald Trump has announced plans for a new candidate to become the US attorney for the District of Columbia, following pushback against his previous nomination.

Trump had previously appointed Ed Martin, a former defense attorney for individuals involved in the events of January 6, 2021, as interim US attorney in Washington, DC. Martin has held this position since January.

However, there are ongoing challenges regarding his confirmation in the Senate. A Republican senator from North Carolina, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, declared on Tuesday that he would oppose Martin’s nomination.

Additionally, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, a prominent Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, voiced his disapproval, stating that Martin had made several misleading statements to the committee.

On Thursday, Trump mentioned he would propose a different candidate who may have broader support.

“He didn’t get the backing from the people I expected,” Trump remarked to reporters. “He did a good job, and we’ve seen crime drop by 25% in DC during his time. But, we have another candidate.”

“I have to be honest. I’m disappointed,” Trump added. “Many people share that disappointment. That’s just how it goes sometimes. Although he wasn’t outright rejected, it seemed it would be tough.”

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comments.
