Pope Leo XIV Becomes the First American to Lead the Catholic Church

Pope Leo XIV: A Historic Election

In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, an American-born pope has been elected for the first time. Cardinal Robert Prebust, a 69-year-old from the U.S., will now lead the church as Pope Leo XIV. During his address to a jubilant crowd in St. Peter’s Square, he emphasized his commitment to pursuing peace and justice and expressed his desire to work with devoted individuals in spreading the message of Jesus Christ without hesitation.

Pope Leo XIV was selected after three voting rounds and is described as a consensus candidate.

“God loves us, he loves everyone,” he conveyed through a translator. “Evil will not triumph. We are all in God’s hands. Thus, we must not fear, but unite with God and forge ahead. We are disciples of Christ, and He will lead us. The world needs His light.”

Born in Chicago in 1955, Leo earned a mathematics degree from Villanova University before joining the Order of St. Augustine. He later received a Master’s in Theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, followed by a Ph.D. in Canon Law from the Pope University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

Leo has served as a missionary in Peru, rising to the position of Bishop of Chiclayo. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as the Director of the Dicastery for the Bishops, which positioned him among the most influential figures in the Vatican. He succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21st.

Although he emerged as a consensus choice, Pope Leo XIV has openly supported traditional church teachings on contentious social matters. For instance, in 2012, he expressed concern that modern culture favors beliefs contrary to the gospel, citing the acceptance of a “gay lifestyle” and “alternative families.” He also voiced his opposition to teaching transgender concepts to children, arguing that “the promotion of gender ideology is confusing because it attempts to create a non-existent gender.”

When addressing economic inequality, some experts believe Leo aligns more closely with Pope Francis’s views. He noted last year that church leaders should embody humility and stand in solidarity with those they serve, sharing in their struggles.

American student organizations have welcomed Leo’s election, highlighting his consistent opposition to abortion, which he referred to as a “form of murder,” affirming that life begins at conception.

“Habemus Papam! Cardinal Robert Prevast has been chosen as the 267th pope and will lead the Roman Church as Pope Leo XIV. This is his first appearance from the balcony of St. Peter’s Cathedral,” a tweet announced.

Reflecting on Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV is recognized for his conservative theological perspective and for asserting moral clarity in public life. While some see his election as a hopeful return to tradition, others are curious about how his American background might shape the Church’s global mission. What does this new leadership signal for the future of the Catholic Church? Do you believe that his nationality will influence his approach, or is the Church’s essence transcendent of borders?
