Everything You Should Know About Robert Francis Prevost: The First Pope from the US

New Papal Leadership: Robert Francis Pribre as Leo XIV

Robert Francis Pribre, recognized as the first pope from the United States, has extensive experience in missionary work in Peru, paired with a solid understanding of the Church’s internal dynamics.

Hailing from Chicago, he has been entrusted by his predecessor, Francis, to oversee a significant Dicastery after being implicated in discussions regarding the appointment of a new bishop.

Francis’s confidence in him underscores a commitment to those often overlooked, highlighting Pribre’s background as a Peruvian missionary and his role as a connector within the Curia.

At 69, the Archbishop of Chiclayo, Peru, has a noteworthy background, having been named a cardinal by Francis in 2023 and serving as Director of Dicastery, one of the Vatican’s pivotal divisions.

Observers believe Pribre stands out among U.S. cardinals for his idealistic approach, broad perspective, and adeptness in navigating complex bureaucratic structures.

An Italian newspaper referred to him as “the least American,” emphasizing his unique story.

His robust grounding in Canon law also helps reassure more traditional cardinals who are advocating for a renewed emphasis on theological matters.

“You can’t turn back.”

In light of Francis’s passing, Pribre expressed that “there is still much to accomplish” within the Church.

“We cannot stop, we cannot turn back. The world in which the Church operates is different from what it was 10 or 20 years ago, so we need to understand what the Holy Spirit desires for today and tomorrow,” he shared with Vatican News last month.

“The core message remains unchanged: we proclaim Jesus Christ, we share the gospel, but how we connect with today’s youth, the impoverished, and political figures needs to evolve,” he stated.

Born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, Pribre began his journey at the minor seminary of the Order of St. Augustine in St. Louis before graduating from Villanova University in Philadelphia.

After obtaining his Master’s in Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago in 1982 and a Ph.D. in Canon Law in Rome, he joined the Augustinians of Peru in 1985, where he completed his first 10-year mission.

Returning to Chicago in 1999, he took on a major leadership role in the global Augustinian order, focusing on the Midwest United States.

However, he went back to Peru in 2014 when Francis appointed him as the apostolic administrator of the Northern Diocese of Chiclayo.

Nearly a decade later, he was appointed to lead DiCastellie in 2023 following the resignation of a Canadian Cardinal over sexual assault allegations, which were later dismissed due to insufficient evidence.

Currently, Pribre also chairs the Latin American Clergy Committee.
