South Carolina execution goes wrong as firing squad fails to hit heart

The recent execution of an inmate in South Carolina by firing squad has raised significant controversy. The inmate, Mikal Mahdi, is said to have potentially experienced severe pain after the execution didn’t go as planned, according to his legal team. Dr. Jonathan Arden, a forensic pathologist employed by Mahdi’s attorney, labeled the execution a “massive botch” after reviewing autopsy findings, which he then presented in a letter to the state Supreme Court.

This lawsuit challenges existing legal standards related to humane executions, arguing that Mahdi’s death constitutes “cruel and unusual punishment,” a claim under the 8th Amendment. Mahdi was previously convicted of two murders, one involving a police officer in South Carolina and another regarding a convenience store clerk in North Carolina.

Dr. Arden’s examination pointed out that the execution fell short of established protocols, noting that only two bullets struck Mahdi, which went below the heart instead of the necessary three to ensure a quick death. “The shooter missed the intended target area,” Arden remarked, implying that due to this error, Mahdi might have remained conscious and aware of his surroundings for up to a minute post-execution.

Witnesses reported hearing Mahdi make sounds after the shots were fired, which highlights the distressing nature of the event. The autopsy was also criticized for lacking critical documents, such as x-rays and proper evidence collection.

Arden condemned the execution, asserting it did not meet the required humane standards. In contrast, another execution performed previously, which allegedly adhered to procedures, involved three bullet wounds to the heart, resulting in a much quicker death.

As of now, prison officials have not indicated that Mahdi’s execution presented any issues, though many details surrounding the firing squad’s procedures remain confidential.

The autopsy findings indicated damage primarily to Mahdi’s right ventricle, leading to further questions about the execution methods. Despite the serious nature of the claims, this case marks a moment of significant scrutiny regarding capital punishment protocols in the state.
