Recent reports from the White House suggest an initiative to raise taxes on the wealthy in order to maintain tax cuts for lower and middle-income citizens.

The tax rate for the highest earners is set to increase from 37% to 39.6%.

According to a report,

the White House is making a final push to raise taxes on the richest Americans as part of President Trump’s significant legislation, while Republican lawmakers finalize their tax proposals.

This plan, as described by multiple sources, involves allowing the tax reduction for the highest income bracket, enacted in 2017, to expire at the end of the year, raising the tax rate to 39.6%.

One source indicated that the president reiterated this request recently. Reports noted that Trump solicited support from Chairman Mike Johnson (R-La.) for this policy, but Johnson did not address questions regarding tax rates as he left the Capitol.

Previously, Republicans mentioned that potential tax options for billionaires were a possibility. This bill has caused surprise and swift backlash from conservatives who have historically resisted such changes to party principles.

“I have stated I will accept this increase graciously to benefit lower and middle-class workers,” Donald Trump commented.

He also remarked, “In truth, Republicans might want to reconsider this, but they would manage just fine if they proceed!!!”

In a separate comment,

Trump criticized the notion of small tax increases for the wealthy that many accept to support lower-income workers, invoking George Bush’s famous phrase, “Read My Lips.” He referred to political sacrifices made in past elections, suggesting, “Republicans might want to think twice about this, but they’ll be alright if they follow through!!!”
