President Donald Trump indicated he would approve 80% tariffs on imports from China, stating that Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent would manage negotiations.
Trump commented, “An 80% tariff on China seems appropriate! Until Scott B,” in a social media post Friday morning.
Last month, the administration announced plans to increase tariffs on goods from China to 145%. Earlier, when Trump revealed that China would respond with its own tariffs, the reduction in tariff levels had led to a rise in tariffs.
Trump further encouraged China to create opportunities for US products.
“China should definitely open a market for US goods. It would benefit them significantly! A closed market isn’t going to cut it anymore!” he added in another post.
Bescent and US trade representative Jamieson Greer are set to travel to Switzerland for discussions with Switzerland’s deputy prime minister. This marks the first public talks between the two nations amidst the Trump administration’s announcement of increased tariffs on Chinese products.
