Ian Wilkinson found himself in the witness box, recounting a fateful lunch shared with three others on July 29, 2023. Tragically, three of the participants are now dead, and one, Erin Patterson, stands accused of their murder.
Wilkinson testified this week at Patterson’s trial, where she has pleaded not guilty to the charges, including the attempted murder of Wilkinson himself.
Wilkinson, a pastor from Columbravaptist Church—about 70 kilometers from the Latrobe Valley Courthouse in Victoria, southeastern Australia—exuded a mix of cheerfulness and nervousness as he shared his story. He recalled a moment two weeks before the lunch when Patterson approached his wife and her mother-in-law at church, expressing eagerness to see them, stating, “The only two I was looking for.”
She invited the two sisters along with their husbands to lunch, a gesture that left Wilkinson feeling happy yet somewhat confused, given their limited relationship. Neither he nor his wife had dined at Patterson’s home before.
“We suggested praying.”
When the day finally arrived, the group gathered in Patterson’s open-plan dining area, sharing a meal of beef Wellington accompanied by mashed potatoes and green beans. For dessert, they had fruit, while Patterson indulged in an orange cake.
After the meal, it became evident why they were all there; Patterson revealed her battle with cancer and sought advice on informing her two children from her estranged husband, Simon Patterson.
The group unanimously agreed that honesty was essential when discussing this with the children. As they talked around the dining table, Wilkinson found himself at the head, flanked by Gale to his right and Erin to his left. Simon was originally scheduled to attend, but he informed them the night before that he couldn’t make it.
During their conversation about cancer, Wilkinson learned that Patterson’s son was home with a friend. Not wanting to steer away from the serious nature of the discussion, he suggested they pray, expressing hope for God’s blessing on Erin and the wisdom to handle the delicate situation regarding her children’s well-being.
Interestingly, although Wilkinson shared insights into the conversation, a statement read to the court indicated that there had been no official record of Patterson being diagnosed with cancer.
After the conversation about her health, Wilkinson left to meet with church members. He later recalled hearing his wife vomiting that night, feeling fine himself at the time. However, they were both soon admitted to Leongatha Hospital, where Heather never returned home.
Wilkinson’s memories of his treatment after ingesting a toxic substance are foggy; he was placed in a coma and eventually released from the hospital in September 2023, nearly two months post-lunch.
Self-exclusion from the hospital
Patterson’s hospital experience was notably shorter. Two days after the lunch, she left the hospital against medical advice, despite medical staff urging her to stay due to concerning symptoms.
Dr. Christopher Webster expressed his surprise at her departure, emphasizing the gravity of her condition. Attempting to reach her after she left, he escalated the matter to hospital authorities, concerned for her safety.
Ultimately, Patterson returned to the hospital shortly after, where she was treated at Monash Hospital until her discharge on August 1st.
As the proceedings unfolded, prosecutors asserted that Patterson feigned illness, while her defense contended she also suffered from the meal that day. Prosecutors further noted that soon after returning home, Patterson disposed of a food dehydrator tied to the forensic evidence linking her to the deadly mushrooms, along with performing a factory reset on her phone.
The trial also examined testimonies from Patterson’s children, who had been interviewed separately by police. Both had kept leftovers from the lunch, and during their questioning, they addressed the concept of truth and lies.
A “very negative” relationship
Insights into the troubled relationship between Simon and Erin Patterson emerged during the trial. Their son described the dynamic as “very negative,” detailing ways Simon attempted to undermine Erin. Court evidence included messages that reflected the hostility between the estranged couple, particularly concerning child support disputes.
Currently, 27 witnesses have been called, and discussions arose around the potential for the trial to conclude sooner than anticipated. Yet, the core questions remained, particularly whether Patterson had intended to poison her guests with the deadly mushrooms.
The trial continues.
