Trans student athlete urges school board to ensure safety for ‘queer’ students from ‘hateful’ harassment following locker room incident.

The conversation about transgender athletes has come to California’s central coast, raising questions about their participation in school sports as students and parents weigh in.

A 16-year-old transgender student spoke up at a Lucia Mar Unified School District board meeting, urging the district to protect him and other LGBTQ+ students at Arroyo Grande High School.

“I was watching not only myself, but other young women undressing biological men. This experience was beyond trauma,” he said, highlighting the distressing environment.

“As a trans athlete, I faced serious slander at the last meeting,” he continued. “I’m here to ask for immediate actions to safeguard queer students against daily harassment. I have felt threatened almost weekly.”

The student pointed out that, unfortunately, breaches to his safety were frequent, largely due to the inadequacies in district policies. He expressed concern that the threats often come from adults in their community.

Students at the meeting identified individuals they believed were spreading harmful misinformation. They alleged that some were coercing young athletes with scripts to manipulate their actions.

“This isn’t merely a policy issue. It’s a fundamental human rights issue,” he asserted. “I urge the LMU school district to act, as the rights of trans people are currently under threat.”

His poignant remarks were shared on social media.

Female students also voiced their concerns, requesting the protection of female athletes from what they perceive as unfair competition with biological males identifying as women. One student expressed her distress, recounting a time she noticed a male student watching her and others in the locker room.

“I went to the women’s locker room for track practice, and I saw not only the biological male being there but also other young women undressing. This experience has surpassed trauma,” she tearfully recalled.

Another speaker mentioned that the school officials are adhering to California law, which adds another layer to the ongoing debate.
