Pope Leo XIV highlights participation in the World Series and interest from the Knicks.

The first Pope hailing from the United States, Robert Prevost, has sparked global interest after his selection as Pope Leo XIV. This week, it came to light that Prevost is a devoted Chicago White Sox fan, with social media footage revealing him during the 2005 World Series.

Interestingly, he was captured on MLB’s Fox broadcast during Game 1 on October 22, 2005, at Cellular Field, as the White Sox triumphed over the Houston Astros with a score of 5-3. The White Sox managed to sweep the series, marking their first championship victory since 1917.

Prevost’s fandom was first disclosed by his brother, John Prevost, during an interview with WGN-TV. John remarked, “He’s always been a Sox fan.” But it seems Prevost’s interests don’t stop at baseball.

Reverend Robert P. Hagan, a close friend of Prevost and pastor at Villanova University, noted his connection to the New York Knicks and former Villanova basketball players. “Watching the Knicks was great, especially with Jalen Brunson and others playing. I think Pope Leo still keeps an eye on the Wildcats. He likely feels proud of their spirit and performance,” he said.

Pope Leo XIV was introduced to the Vatican by Pope Francis and became a bishop in January 2023. He was elevated to Cardinal status later that September. Leo is known for his strong stance on environmental issues and outreach to marginalized communities, reflecting a commitment to Francis’ teachings aimed at expanding the reach of the Catholic Church.

In 2015, Leo also acquired Peruvian citizenship, living there until his relocation to the Vatican in 2023. While in Peru, he served as vice-president of the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference from 2018 to 2023.
