Trump and China near a trade agreement following successful discussions, Bessent states

Trade Negotiations with China Progressing

Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent mentioned on Sunday that the Trump administration has made headway in its trade discussions with China. He promised to share more specifics the following day, speaking to reporters from Switzerland. He added that President Trump was fully briefed on the developments, similar to what Ambassador Jamieson conveyed recently.

The Trump administration has imposed high tariffs on approximately 145% of Chinese goods in an effort to address the ongoing trade deficit with various countries. Recently, the president put a hold on mutual tariff plans that were set for April 2 with multiple nations. This move was aimed at encouraging trade, but after China’s response, which included its own tariffs, discussions shifted. China, in reaction to U.S. trade policy, enacted a 125% tax on American products.

Bescent, along with U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer, met with Chinese officials in Switzerland this weekend to discuss future economic ties, which Trump had referenced in a social media post.

Negotiations Describe a Collaborative Reset

According to reports, discussions were cordial and constructive, aiming for improved collaboration between American businesses and China that could benefit both parties. This was echoed in posts to social media platforms by members of the administration.

Earlier this month, China’s Ministry of Commerce indicated they were evaluating the U.S. offer regarding trade talks related to tariffs on Chinese imports.

Continued Dialogue on Trade Matters

The Trump administration had previously indicated on April 8 that they were open to negotiations, with Trump stating that they were awaiting a response from China.

Recent updates suggest that a preliminary trade agreement has been reached since the announcement of Trump’s “liberation date” on April 2. This follows separate trade deals made with the UK last week, as the administration took steps to alleviate trade barriers affecting U.S. exports.

Trump remarked that this new agreement with the UK emphasizes the importance of fair and mutual international trade relations. It includes better market access for American exports, particularly agricultural products, which will significantly boost the availability of goods like American beef and ethanol.

Currently, the UK maintains its existing 10% tariffs on imports while removing taxes on items such as steel and cars.
