Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader from New York, remarked that China seems to have fared better under the Trump administration. This observation follows announcements from Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who reported a contract signed with Chinese officials aimed at resolving the ongoing trade conflict between the two largest economies.
“Unfortunately, it appears that China has once again benefited from Trump’s presidency. This is just another example of the chaos associated with Trump. His policies seem to change daily,” Schumer noted on Social Media Platform x.
In a recent agreement over the weekend, U.S. and Chinese officials decided to significantly reduce mutual tariffs. They extended the timeframe for negotiations and introduced a “trade consultation mechanism” by which Chinese officials will help resolve disputes.
Monday saw a joint announcement from the U.S. and China, disclosing plans to pause increased tariffs for a period of 90 days. U.S. import fees on Chinese goods would drop from 145% to 30%, while China would lower duties on American products from 125% to 10%.
This news sparked a rally in the stock market, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average increasing by approximately 1,000 points (2.2%), and the S&P 500 and Tech-heavy Nasdaq rising by 2.5% and 3.4%, respectively.
