College football standout Nathaniel Bernard Jennings fatally shot while in his Florida hometown for Mother’s Day weekend

A college football standout was reportedly shot and killed by a former college basketball player while back in his hometown in Florida during the Mother’s Day weekend.

Nathaniel Bernard Jennings, 19, was fatally shot in downtown Melbourne following a dispute with 24-year-old Stephen Dugiste near a bar around 1:50 a.m. on Saturday, according to police.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and found Jennings unresponsive. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Dugiste, a former point guard at Eastern Florida State University, was questioned at the scene and asserted that he acted in self-defense during the confrontation.

He has since been arrested and charged with manslaughter and is currently held at the Brevard County Jail Complex.

Surveillance footage from newly installed cameras in the downtown area is being reviewed by investigators, who are still looking into what triggered the argument between the two men.

It remains unclear whether Jennings, a Heritage High School graduate, and Dugiste, from Bayside High School, were previously acquainted.

“It’s a thorough investigation,” said Lt. Col. Bradley Blunt of the Melbourne Police Department.

Following the news of Jennings’ tragic death, Matt Moore, head football coach at Northwestern University, released a statement honoring Jennings’s character.

“Nate was an invaluable member of our team. His presence and spirit were infectious, both on and off the field. We extend our prayers to his family during this challenging time,” Moore stated.

Jennings had a remarkable freshman season, recording 55 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery.

This incident marks the first reported murder in Melbourne this year and the second in the downtown area over the past two years.

Randy Bennett, a nearby bar owner, expressed his shock, noting that the shooting happened right next to his establishment while staff were present.

“It’s shocking. This area has always felt safe,” Bennett remarked.

Local resident Linda Booley shared her distress, asking why such violence would occur in a place meant for enjoyment.

Dugiste made his first court appearance on Monday and is being held without bond, with his next hearing scheduled for June 5th.
