Trump Administration Will Face a ‘Challenge’ if More Democrats Are Arrested

Ocasio-Cortez Warns of Consequences for More Arrests of Democrats

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) issued a warning to the Trump administration, suggesting that further arrests of Democrats could escalate tensions. This statement came in an Instagram video shared on Sunday, following the arrest of three House Democrats: Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and Ramonica McKibber after their visit to an Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Center. Ocasio-Cortez has criticized the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), accusing it of making “public threats.”

“If anyone is breaking the law here, it’s not Congress members; it’s the Department of Homeland Security,” she remarked, specifically mentioning Tom Homan and his secretary, Christy Noem. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that targeting lawmakers, such as Watson Coleman or others involved, would lead to serious issues.

ICE officials alleged that Democratic figures, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, faced hostility from a large group of protesters at the Delaney Hall Detention Center last week. According to Trump administration officials, this facility plays a crucial role in detaining violent immigrants illegally. However, local leaders like Baraka insist that the government’s claims are unfounded and that proper permissions have been secured to house immigrants at this site.

Democratic officials refuted the accusations, with Rep. Watson Coleman stating on MSNBC that the Trump administration is using “law enforcement as a weapon.” She painted a vivid picture of injustice, describing how, for instance, handcuffing the mayor of New Jersey’s largest city—and by extension affecting his family—contradicts the values of America.
