Investigation into ICE Facility Threats Begins
House Attorney Jim Jordan from Ohio is initiating an investigation into threats aimed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, according to recent reports.
This decision follows the controversy surrounding three House Democrats accused of “raiding” a detention center in New Jersey. Jordan is expected to hold a hearing next Tuesday, featuring testimony from former ICE and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials.
The hearing will likely address threats to operations at the Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Newark has faced arrest for alleged assault during a protest at the ICE facility, where members of the Democratic Council intended to conduct a “surveillance visit.”
The upcoming hearing is anticipated to cover how the previous Trump administration responded to issues around illegal immigration and threats to national security.
Interestingly, while the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on oversight, led by New Jersey Republican Rep. Jeff Vandrew, might take the lead, it is not yet clear if Jordan’s full committee will be directly involved.
This situation marks a significant move by a key ally of former President Donald Trump within Congress.
There are ongoing discussions among Republicans regarding potential repercussions for the three Democrats who protested outside the Newark ICE facility late last week.
Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and Ramonica McQuiver joined Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and other demonstrators in an effort to gain access to the detention center, particularly as a bus carrying detainees arrived.
The Democrats assert their rights as federal employees, claiming they were entitled to enter the facility. Conversely, Republicans contend that their actions were reckless, potentially endangering law enforcement and detainees, and argue that the Democrats aimed for a political spectacle.
The White House has also critiqued the actions of the Democrats, labeling them as “crossing the line” by breaching the ICE facility.
Proposals for punitive actions against the Democrats range from formal condemnation to possible criminal charges. For instance, Republican Rep. Buddy Carter from Georgia recently introduced a resolution to remove these Democrats from their committee positions.
In a joint statement, the three Democrats emphasized that members of Congress are permitted to observe DHS detention facilities without prior notification, insisting that their actions last week were completely within legal boundaries.
