New Jersey Couple Accused of Long-term Abuse
A couple from New Jersey is facing serious accusations of abusing an 18-year-old girl for seven years. Prosecutors say they forced her to live in a wooden dog box and chained her in a bathroom filled with various animals.
Brenda Spencer, 38, and Brandon Mosley, 41, from Gloucester Township, have been charged with inflicting physical, mental, and sexual harm on the girl since 2018. According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, the allegations detail a disturbing pattern of abuse.
The victim managed to escape from the home last week. She reported that the abuse began when Spencer took her out of school in the sixth grade, confining her to a dog’s wooden box for about a year. Following that, she was locked in a bathroom, where she was chained and only allowed to go out during family visits, which, according to prosecutors, was a tactic to conceal the abuse.
When not in the bathroom, the girl was confined to a bare room, with just a bucket for a toilet. The door was secured with an alarm system that alerted Spencer and Mosley if she attempted to leave.
In addition to emotional abuse, the victim reported being physically beaten and sexually assaulted by Mosley, who works as a train conductor. With the assistance of a neighbor, she finally contacted the police to reveal the extent of her suffering.
During the investigation, authorities found another girl, aged 13, who had also been removed from school by Spencer several years earlier. In addition, officers discovered multiple dogs, chinchillas, and other animals in the residence.
The nature of the relationship between Spencer and the girl remains unclear.
The couple was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault and child endangerment, along with various weapons charges. Mosley faces an additional five charges related to sexual assault.
Both Spencer and Mosley are currently in custody at the Camden County Correctional Facility, awaiting their court hearing.
