How Jude Law’s ‘Young Pope’ foresaw the first American Pope

Historic Moment: The First American Pope

On May 8, 2025, an unexpected event unfolded at the Pope Conclave, with white smoke signaling the election of the first American pope. Cardinal Robert Francis Prost, 69, from Chicago, took the name Pope Leo XIV.

Interestingly, this momentous occasion was foreshadowed by the 2016 HBO series “The Young Pope,” featuring Jude Law, which had a strikingly similar narrative. The show followed the fictional Pope Lenny Belardo and raised eyebrows for its bold themes.

Actor Jack McCade, who as a child starred in “The Young Pope,” shared his feelings upon hearing the news. “Wow, that feels familiar,” he remarked, reflecting on how, even though he had sensed this was a possibility, it was still shocking to see it happen so soon.

McCade, who played a younger version of Cardinal Dussolier, reminisced about being just 10 years old while filming. Sebastian Rochet, another cast member, also expressed nostalgia, sharing throwback photos from their time on the show.

The Emmy-nominated series, co-produced by HBO and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, depicted a fictional pope with a much different background than the newly elected Leo XIV. While Leo XIV hails from Chicago, the character Lenny Belardo was a New Yorker and took on the name Pope Pius XIII.

Rochet fondly remembered his experience working with Sorrentino, describing it as illuminating and surreal. The unorthodox content of the series—filled with unexpected nudity and absurdity—contrasted sharply with the conventions typically associated with the Church.

Fans of the show quickly noted its cultural impact, as its unique scenes spawned numerous memes, one notably featuring Jude Law’s character lounging in sunglasses.

During filming, Rochet shared a humorous encounter where people mistook him for a real cardinal just because of his costume. “It’s funny how a simple outfit can influence how people perceive you,” he commented, highlighting the quirks of everyday life on set.

In a past interview, Law reflected on his approach to the character, describing the elaborate robes he wore as both burdensome and integral to his performance. These intricacies added depth, and he even received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal.

While he has worked with major film stars like Harrison Ford and Anthony Hopkins, Rochet continued to celebrate the unique artistry of “The Young Pope.” Given past comments from Sorrentino about predicting future events, it’s fascinating to see how art and reality can intertwine.

McQuaid expressed his admiration for Sorrentino as a visionary, recalling the professionalism on set and the nudge towards great storytelling. “He’s one of the most artistic people I’ve met,” McCade stated, reflecting on how the experience shaped his career.
