Waiting for your NC state tax refund? Here’s why some checks aren’t being printed or sent out at the moment.

People expecting their tax refund checks in North Carolina are going to have to wait a bit longer. The state has revealed that their printing partner has ceased operations.

On Monday, the North Carolina Department of Revenue announced that Professional Mail Services, Inc. is no longer in business and won’t be able to finish printing or emailing the necessary documents.

The department acknowledged that there are notifications and refund checks that are still pending and haven’t been mailed out yet.

According to an agency representative, they are currently exploring options to resume sending out notifications and refund checks as soon as possible.

These delays are mainly impacting those who filed paper returns or opted for paper checks.

Further updates can be found on the department’s website. For questions regarding accounts, individuals should call customer service at 1-877-252-3052.

It’s not uncommon to experience delays with state tax refunds. A report pointed out that an Apex couple had waited four months for their refund check, while most refunds typically process within 21 days.

The department previously indicated that delays can occur in part due to efforts to prevent identity theft and refund fraud. Filers might also receive requests for additional information.

For tracking tax refunds, there’s a tool available on the IRS website. If a paper return is submitted, updates will appear within 24 hours of electronic submission.

Updates occur online daily, and you’ll need either a Social Security number or an individual taxpayer ID number to track your refund.
