Oswaldo Cabrera’s encouraging message to Yankees fans following his surgery for a severe broken ankle

Oswald Cabrera has taken the first step towards recovery.

The Yankees’ versatile player shared on Thursday that he successfully underwent ankle surgery following a break he sustained during a game in Seattle on Monday night.

“Today marks the start of my return to the field,” Cabrera mentioned in an Instagram post late Thursday.

“I feel so motivated now, more than ever before. Your incredible support has fueled my determination.”

The Yankees were hopeful that the surgery would reveal the extent of his injuries and offer a chance for him to play again this season.

Details on whether he suffered ligament damage along with the fractures remain unclear.

Reflecting on Monday, Cabrera described it as a “sad night,” resulting in many negative thoughts after the painful incident.

Yet, he expressed how the outpouring of support from family, friends, fans, agents, coaches, and teammates brought a “big smile” to his face.

Numerous Yankees players and staff, including Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe, visited Cabrera at the hospital before his release late that night.

His teammates were visibly upset when he was taken off the field in an ambulance, but found some comfort seeing him cheerful the next morning in the hotel lobby before heading back to New York.

“Perhaps it’s only after going through experiences like this that one truly appreciates the support around them,” he reflected.

“Today, I had a successful surgery thanks to a great medical team, and with the help of God, my parents, my fiancé, and all those who care about me, I want to express my gratitude. Thank you for your concern.”
