Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola has been placed on the injured list as the challenging season draws to a close.
Nola, 31, is sidelined for 15 days due to a right ankle sprain, as the team announced on Friday.
According to Phillies manager Rob Thomson, Nola sustained the injury earlier this month while doing agility drills in the outfield before a game series.
This marks Nola’s first time on the injured list since 2017.
“We thought he could push through it, and he believed he could too,” Thomson shared with reporters. “It’s improving, but since I haven’t seen him out there, it’s best to halt his activity before it potentially leads to issues with his elbow, quad, or shoulder.”
“This is going to take some time,” Thomson continued. “We really want to make sure we’re taking care of him now.”
He also expressed confidence that Nola wouldn’t be away from the team beyond the planned 15 days.
Prior to his injury, Nola’s performance this season had been particularly rough, sporting a 1-7 record with a career-high 6.16 ERA through nine starts in 2025.
These stats stand in sharp contrast to last season, where he finished with a solid 14-8 record and a 3.57 ERA, despite making 33 starts—the most in the league.
In the meantime, with Nola out, the Phillies are calling up Mick Abel from Triple A, expecting him to pitch against the Pirates on Sunday.
Abel, once the top Phillies prospect in 2022, has posted a 2.53 ERA this season across eight starts at Triple A Lehigh Valley.
The 23-year-old hasn’t had much time in the majors, especially with veteran starter Tai Juan Walker anticipated to return to the Phillies lineup next week.
