Rep. Glenn Evie Discusses Trump’s Criticism of the Supreme Court
During a recent episode of MSNBC’s “Weekday,” Rep. Glenn Evie (D-MD) addressed President Donald Trump’s remarks about the Supreme Court’s handling of deportations. Trump had criticized the Court, referring to its efforts as attempts to remove “criminals” from the country.
Co-host Michael Steele reacted by commenting on Trump’s tone, highlighting a tweet where the President claimed, “The Supreme Court will not allow us to drive criminals out of our country!” Steele expressed confusion over Trump’s approach, noting that as President, he’s meant to respect the judicial branch. He pointed out that for nearly 250 years, while people may not always agree with court decisions, they haven’t questioned the legitimacy of those decisions. Steele further questioned how the ongoing protests and court proceedings reflect the current situation in the country.
Evie responded by suggesting there is a segment of the population that supports Trump’s rhetoric, although he believes that many who originally voted for him did so for other reasons, like improving the economy. He criticized the pretense surrounding the legitimacy of legal processes and accused Trump of undermining the Supreme Court. Evie remarked that although these protests are vocal, he feels that the claims being made are not substantiated enough to hold up in court, suggesting a level of embarrassment on Trump’s part for not being able to bring substantial evidence forward.
