Chef Celebrates Gas Station Food as an American Staple
Chef Andrew Zimmern, renowned for his culinary explorations, recently shared his thoughts on gas station food’s place in American cuisine during an interview with Fox News Digital. Having been on the road for over 25 years, he feels a unique authority on the subject.
“Honestly, I might be one of the few people who has stopped at as many gas stations as I have in two decades,” Zimmern remarked. He is currently collaborating with Casey’s Gas Stations, based in Iowa, to promote his new BBQ Brisket Pizza.
“It’s all about our sense of adventure,” he explained. “You don’t need a grand trip overseas to experience something new. Just walk into a local spot and try what they have to offer.” He emphasizes that there’s something special about tasting local treats found in these everyday places.
Zimmern expressed enthusiasm about the BBQ Brisket Pizza, stating that it features “real and healthy ingredients,” which he appreciates sharing with his family. He noted that in today’s economic climate, there’s value in providing a pizza that can easily feed a family of four without breaking the bank.
Beyond just pizza, he believes there’s a wealth of quality food available at gas stations. He recalled a fond memory of enjoying breakfast burritos in Arizona made by local grandmas, highlighting the unique and delightful surprises that can come from these stops.
When it comes to indulging in food on the road, Zimmern is unapologetic. “Sure, we’re all about healthy living, but I think it’s okay to have cheat days,” he said, acknowledging that balance is essential.
He humorously added, “If I were to eat three pizzas a day non-stop, that probably wouldn’t be ideal.” However, he’s firm in his stance on enjoying pizza. “I choose to live in a world where pizza is part of the plan, so I can savor it whenever I want along with my favorite Mexican soda,” he concluded.
