Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, has emphasized the importance of allowing children to experience risks and failures. In the latest episode of her podcast, “IMO,” she shared her desire for her daughters to develop confidence and independence through trial and error.
“Many parents seem hesitant to witness their children make mistakes,” she pointed out. “It can be tough to see your kids hit a wall, especially when you’ve advised them against it.”
However, she added, “If you shield them from those experiences, you actually hinder their growth. They need to understand that it’s okay to stumble and learn from it.” She stressed the value of discussing these experiences afterward, suggesting that as children grow, they should learn to navigate their own paths more freely.
Obama noted that while teaching resilience is a primary responsibility of parents, many tend to hold their children too tightly. She recommended that parents encourage independence from a young age, even with small steps like walking to school alone. “So, take some risks—it can be done gently,” she advised.
