Pope Leo XIX talks about unity and conflict during his first mass on Sunday.

Pope Leo XIV Inaugurates His Papacy in St. Peter’s Square

Pope Leo XIV addressed the themes of unity and the suffering caused by war during his inaugural Mass at St. Peter’s Square. The 69-year-old American pope, marking a historic moment as the first pope from the U.S., delivered his message to an audience of around 200,000 people, according to Vatican News.

In his homily, he expressed a longing for a united church, saying, “We hope that our first great desire is a sign of united church, unity and communion. It will become a panne of a reconciliated world.” He highlighted the ongoing pain in society, pointing out that “too many wounds caused by inconsistency, hatred, violence, prejudice, fear of differences, and economic paradigms that use the resources of the planet to alienate the poorest” still exist.

Pope Leo emphasized the importance of traditional family structures, stating that unions based on “the union between men and women” uphold the dignity of the fetus.

His call for unity is particularly relevant given the current polarization within the Catholic Church, especially in the United States. He noted, “In the joy of faith and communion, we cannot forget our brothers and sisters who are suffering for the war,” referencing areas like Gaza, Myanmar, and Ukraine, and specifically mentioning Regina Kayeli in his prayers.

During his first press conference, the Pope encouraged journalists, acknowledging the challenges posed by artificial intelligence.

He also expressed a deep connection to his predecessor, saying, “I felt the spiritual presence of Pope Francis, who accompanied us from heaven.” He concluded his address by invoking the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking for her intercession for peace and comfort for those in need.

Leo began his papacy with a traditional Popemobile tour through the Piazza, a gesture symbolizing the global connection of the papacy.
