Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration Mass
On May 18, 2025, Vice President J.D. Vance, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, attended the inaugural mass of Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City. The ceremony marked a significant moment in the Catholic Church’s history, as it welcomed the first American Pope.
After the mass, Vance and the Second Lady, Usha Vance, briefly met Pope Leo XIV in St. Peter’s Square. It was a cordial encounter, with the two shaking hands and exchanging a few words. Usha was notably dressed in a black lace veil, which added a touch of solemnity to the moment.
Marco Rubio and his wife, Janet, also had the opportunity to greet the new Pope, adding to the day’s historic significance. Vance’s journey into Catholicism began in 2019, and this was his second meeting with a Pope, having met Pope Francis just a month prior.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was also present at the mass. Following the ceremony, he met with Pope Leo XIV and expressed gratitude towards the Vatican for its willingness to facilitate discussions between Ukraine and Russia. The Pope has extended an invitation to both leaders to mediate peace, hoping to foster dialogue amid ongoing tensions.
Zelensky shared his appreciation on social media, highlighting the Pope as a beacon of hope for many worldwide. His words underscored the vital role the Holy See could potentially play in seeking peace for his nation.
