Senator Murphy Calls for Early Exit from Presidential Race by Biden
Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy has suggested that former President Joe Biden should have exited the presidential race earlier, arguing that Democrats would have benefited from a more open primary. In an interview with NBC, he conveyed his thoughts, stating, “Looking back, the president should have come out of the race before.”
Biden made a surprising decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election in July, especially following a challenging discussion with President Donald Trump, which left many questions about his clarity and composure. Vice President Kamala Harris then stepped in as the leading candidate with limited time left in the campaign.
As scrutiny around Biden’s fitness for office has intensified, particularly due to the release of the book “Original Sin” by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Politico’s Alex Thompson, concerns have grown about his cognitive state. A recording from his October 2023 testimony revealed that he struggled to recall his son Beau’s date of death.
There’s been some caution regarding the fairness in assessing Biden’s cognitive abilities based on that recording; it is, after all, a deeply emotional subject for him. Still, Murphy pointed out that the Democratic audience appears to desire a different candidate in 2024. He also recalled periods when he perceived Biden as being “in control,” suggesting that the current decline is evident.
The senator emphasized that it’s crucial for Democrats to heed voters’ wishes for younger, more competitive candidates, especially considering Trump’s past success. He remarked, “By 2024, Americans decided that new people wanted new people, they wanted younger people. It was a mistake to not listen early and put ourselves in a stronger position.”
