Investigation Launched into Surrogacy Racket in Chinese Village
Authorities are looking into a surrogacy operation in a Chinese village, where a woman with a voice disorder was allegedly used as a surrogate. This revelation came after trafficking activist Shanguan Zhengyi uncovered the racket on May 12. Zhengyi had spent several days monitoring a suspicious cottage located in Changsha, Hunan Province.
The three-story building reportedly acted as the center for this illegal operation. During a police raid, officials discovered 16 hospital beds designated for surrogacy treatments.
The first floor was identified as the Primaryo-Peting Operating Center, containing an operating room, lab, and patient ward. Reports indicated that all windows in the establishment were covered with blue film, obstructing any view of the activities inside.
The operating area was equipped with shelves stocked with needles and other specialized tools necessary for surgeries like egg collection and needle movement.
Near the entrance, several vehicles were parked, including an unregistered white van, presumed to have been used for transporting women.
During the investigation, nine women were rescued and taken to Changsha Women and Children’s Health Care Hospital for medical evaluations.
A 41-year-old surrogate from Shaanxi Province, who communicated through sign language, informed Zhengyi that she received 280,000 yuan (approximately $39,000) for embryo transfer services. Additionally, a 29-year-old woman from Sichuan Province claimed to have received 190,000 yuan (around $26,000) for a similar procedure.
These women were subsequently turned over to local officials and reunited with their families.
On May 12, local health officials stated that the situation would be addressed with strict legal measures, including the sealing of the facilities involved and oversight of necessary staff.
Authorities also reported the arrest of 18 individuals, including a representative, an anesthesiologist, and several nurses from a private hospital, for their roles in the surrogacy racket.
In a related incident in November 2024, a 22-year-old Chinese woman fell victim to the illegal surrogacy scheme, and her tragic miscarriage gained considerable attention online.
