Nikki Haley brings up her mental competency test idea again in light of Biden’s health updates

Nikki Haley, while campaigning for the 2024 presidential election, emphasized the need for a “new generation of leadership.” This was a central theme of her bid for the Republican nomination. From the get-go, she advocated for a “mental competence test for politicians over 75,” a proposal she introduced upon declaring her candidacy in February 2023.

This idea quickly became a notable, and at times contentious, part of her speeches as she challenged then-76-year-old Donald Trump for the GOP nomination, with the aim of running against 80-year-old President Joe Biden in the general election.

As the Democratic Party faced scrutiny about Biden’s cognitive abilities, Haley’s campaign gained traction. Critics, including 83-year-old Senator Bernie Sanders, accused her of ageism for her stance. Despite being one of the last Republican candidates to take on Trump, her campaign ended in March 2024 as Trump secured the nomination.

The conversation around Biden’s mental and physical fitness continues to resonate, with fresh questions arising as his cognitive abilities have been a talking point. A recent excerpt from a new book titled “Original Singh: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Miserable Choice to Run Again” has reignited these discussions.

In addition to this, leaked audio from a 2023 interview with Biden’s advisor, Robert Huar, suggests the president may struggle with memory lapses. Huar, who had initially looked into allegations regarding Biden’s mishandling of classified documents, referred to him as “an elderly man with poor memory,” which drew significant attention.

Last week, it was also reported that Biden had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized. The revelation has garnered sympathy and concern from both sides of the aisle, especially in light of ongoing discussions about his leadership capabilities.

A source linked to Haley’s political journey remarked that while the media may have been surprised by her call for cognitive testing, it resonated with the public. They pointed out that Haley believes in transparent leadership. “America deserves leaders who are mentally sharp and aware of their responsibilities to the people,” the source noted.

Haley, now 51, has reiterated her call for mental competence tests throughout her campaign. She pointed to Trump’s verbal missteps on the campaign trail and noted, “He’s not the same as he was in 2016. That’s just a fact.” Trump, in return, has defended himself, claiming to be sharper than Haley and touting his own cognitive evaluation from years prior.

On the topic of Biden, particularly after the leak of Huar’s report, Haley stated, “Biden can’t recall significant events from his past, which is concerning. If someone in such an influential position can’t manage their memory, it raises deeper issues.” She has pushed for the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, explaining it should not disqualify anyone but rather enhance transparency around competency for high-stakes positions.

Political analyst Wayne Lesperance has also chimed in, suggesting that Americans are increasingly concerned about the age and cognitive ability of their leaders. He argued that a fair, nonpartisan cognitive assessment could be beneficial, ensuring that anyone in power remains capable of making critical decisions with clarity and sound judgment.
